I can totally relate to this! Sometimes I'm rather glad to not be involved in as tight-knit of a community as the one we grew up in. But other times there are elements that I do miss, even though I know that where we are at this point in our lives is the right place for us.

Yep, I'm still lurking --

Interesting.
I sort of like the idea of a one layered community, although I myself prefer moving within several different social circles - perhaps because I feel inspired by a certain sense of dynamics caused by 'variety', 'multiple ideas', etc.

To me, community as such is valuable - perhaps not so much needing to overlap, as to 'last'.
Actually I'm racking my brains re. who really knows me from when I was a child till now... it can give a sense of loneliness to realize that other than my nuclear family (and then each lives their own life ofcourse) there is not one person that has really known me through all the years from babyhood till now.

This hits "close to home" since we moved away from Vancouver.
Even before we moved I was thinking about having that sense of community. Numerous moves leave a smattering of friends across the globe. I guess this adds a very different dynamic to "global warming."
