Standards

Me, to a patient who has just detailed his heroin addiction: "How many alcoholic drinks do you have each day?"

Patient, with disgust: "I'm no boozer! I don't touch the stuff."

Me, to a patient who has just described her long history of alcohol abuse: "Do you use street drugs?"

Patient, indignantly: "Of course not! I'm not an addict."

Me, to a patient who snorts cocaine: "Do you smoke cigarettes?"

Patient: "What, cancer sticks? No!"

Me: "Do you inject drugs?"

Patient, proudly: "I've never touched a needle."
